Curriculum Vitae: Dr John Stubbs
John Stubbs has been at Simon Fraser University since 1993 where he is
a Professor in the Department of History. From 1993 to 1997 he served as
President and Vice-Chancellor of the University.
From 1987 to 1993, he served as President and Vice-Chancellor of Trent
University in Peterborough, Ontario; he was also a Professor in the Department
of History at Trent. He joined the Department of History at the University
of Waterloo in 1973. During a 14 year career at Waterloo, he served as Associate
Chairman of History, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Director of
the Applied Studies Co-operative Education Program and Co-Director of the
Waterloo Centre for New Oxford English Dictionary. He is a graduate of the
University of Toronto, the London School of Economics and Political Science
and Oxford University.
He has published Mackenzie King: Widening the Debate (co-editor);
articles in English Historical Review, Journal of Imperial and Commonwealth
History, Albion, Historical Journal; chapters in four books; numerous
book reviews.
His community work has involved serving on the boards of a number of
arts and development education organizations, and a community college board.
He is a Director of the Laurier Institution and was a Director of the Vancouver
Board of Trade. From 1994 to 1996 he chaired the Education Division of the
United Way of the Lower Mainland. Dr Stubbs is a Director of BC Hydro as
well as being a Director of the Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation.
In 1995, he shared the 'Humanitarian of the Year Award' given by The
News in Burnaby for his work to preserve Burnaby Mountain and in 1992
he was awarded the Canada 125th Anniversary Medal.
John enjoys jogging, travel, reading, canoeing and skiing. He is married
to Mayling and has one son, Jamie.
