Main Features

The preliminary load of 12,835 EFTSU is 445 EFTSU higher than the final 31 March 2000 load figure of 12,390 EFTSU and compares with a 1999 load of 12,349 EFTSU.

Postgraduate enrolments have increased to 2,204 EFTSU from 2,149 EFTSU in 2000 as compared with 2,182 EFTSU in 1999. Postgraduate has declined marginally as a proportion of the total load from 17.3% to 17.2 %.

The higher degree by research enrolment of 1,343 EFTSU compares with 1,334 EFTSU last year.

The 31 March local non fee-paying load has increased by 236 EFTSU from 10,495 EFTSU to 10,731 EFTSU. The higher degree by research load within this category has decreased from 1,142 EFTSU to 1,116 EFTSU, while the postgraduate coursework load has also decreased from 243 EFTSU to 205 EFTSU. On the other hand, undergraduate load in this category has increased from 9,110 EFTSU to 9,410 EFTSU.

The local fee-paying (postgraduate) load of 391 EFTSU is 61 EFTSU higher than the final 31 March 2000 load.

The fee-paying overseas student load has increased by 171 EFTSU from 1,493 EFTSU in 2000 to 1,664 EFTSU.

Explanatory Notes

The 2001 figures shown in Preliminary Enrolment Statistics 2001 relate to enrolments as of 31 March 2001 and have been derived from data extracted from the Student Records System on 6 April. Late changes of enrolment data are still being processed. The final HECS liability notices that have been sent to students will generate further changes of enrolments. As such these figures are preliminary only. The final enrolment figures are expected to be within 0.2% of the preliminary figures. Last year, the total load in UNISTATS 2000 was 5 EFTSU below the preliminary figure of 12,354 EFTSU.

Source of Funds Groups

Enrolments and load figures have been divided into four main groups and nine minor groups according to funding source as described below.

1. Local Non-Fee-Paying Students

This group comprises:

  1. Operating Grant Students. This group includes local undergraduate and postgraduate coursework degree students whose load counts against operating grant targets. These students are usually HECS liable although a few operating grant students are in receipt of an HECS-exemption scholarship or are HECS exempt because they are enrolled in an enabling course.
  2. Research Training Scheme Students. Local higher degree by research students whose places are funded under the Research Training Scheme.
  3. Local Fee-Exempt Higher Degree by Research Students. Local higher-degree-by-research students whose have been exempted from fees but whose places are not funded under the Research Training Scheme.
  4. Other Non Operating Grant Students. This group includes students in courses and programmes such as the MPH which has been funded separately by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Family Services, the BSc(Wool Science) which was funded under the Commonwealth Industry Places Scheme and the Overseas Trained Doctors Scheme.

It should be noted that prior to 2001, the enrolments and load of local non fee-paying higher degree by research students were counted in the operating grant figures. To facilitate more meaningful comparisons over time where possible the latest definitions have been applied to the time series.

2. Local Fee-Paying Students

This group comprises local students who are enrolled on a fee-paying basis in award courses. It should be noted that prior to 2000, most of these enrolments were counted as operating grant students. The group also includes students whose fees are paid either directly or indirectly by a third party, such as those enrolled in the Master of Forensic Science and the Master of Psychology in Clinical Neuropsychology who are exempted from fees because of contributions received from the WA Government.

3. Fee-Paying Overseas Students

This group comprises all overseas students. Overseas students are usually enrolled on a fee-paying basis either privately funded or under foreign-aid programmes. This category is divided into two groups:

  1. On-Shore Fee-Paying Overseas Students.
  2. Off-Shore Fee-Paying Overseas Students.

4. Local Time Limit and Non-Award

These two groups comprise:

  1. Time Limit Students. This group comprises those local higher-degree-by-research students who have exceeded the maximum periods that DETYA will fund higher degree by research enrolments. Students who commenced higher degrees by research prior to 2001, are subject to time limits of 5 years full-time equivalent in a Doctorate or 3 years full-time equivalent in a Masters research degree. With the introduction of its Research Training Scheme, DETYA reduced these maximum funding periods to a full-time equivalent of 4 years and 2 years respectively for students who commence from 2001 onwards.
  2. Australian Non-Award Students. Students enrolled on a non-award basis are excluded from the operating grant funded load. However, non-overseas students enrolled on a cross-institutional basis are counted in the operating grant load.

Table 1 shows the total enrolment numbers and load by broad funding category as at 31 March 2001

Table 2 shows the enrolment figures of those students who are classified as commencing. Essentially a student is considered to be commencing a course of study if he/she enrolled in their course for the first time since the previous year's reference date. For example, all students who enrolled in a course for the first time after 31 March 2000 and who were enrolled on 31 March 2001, are considered commencing students in the year 2001.

Table 3 shows the student load (EFTSU) of each faculty and department by course type and source of funds group. The course type has been derived from the course of each student enrolled in the units taught by the department. The Miscellaneous course type category includes bridging course (e.g. the Aboriginal Orientation Course), cross-institution and non-award enrolments. The table also includes two weighted loads: the Faculty Funding Model (FFM) weighted EFTSU and the Library-weighted load. The FFM-weighted EFTSU has been derived by multiplying the student load for each course type and discipline category by the weight used in the University's budget model. The Library-weighted EFTSU has been derived by multiplying the student load for each course type by the corresponding weight used in the University's budget model.

Table 4 shows the student enrolments and load (EFTSU) in each unit taught by each department by broad funding category.
